Join us in a National Tribute and Salute to Our Fallen Heroes
In response to necessary adjustments to traditional Memorial Day plans, the BSA has partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to ensure every fallen hero is remembered this year with a special tribute and salute. Together, we are asking Scouts across the country to post tribute messages on veterans’ memorial pages within the Veterans Legacy Memorial – a digital memorial that houses a profile for each of the 3.7 million veterans interred in one of more than 140 national cemeteries.
Among those fallen heroes are tens of thousands of brave men and women who have passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic – at a time when customary services and funeral honors cannot safely be performed. The VA has published a list of those individuals, and we are asking Scouts to pay special attention to this group when writing their digital tributes.
We are also asking Scouts to take part in the established National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day with a special Scouting salute at their homes, followed by the playing of “Taps” at 3:01 p.m. by Scouting buglers across the country. Leading up to Memorial Day, Scouts may also place flags at headstones, as individuals or with members of their family, where regulations allow.
Go to Scout Salute for a step-by-step participation guide and associated marketing materials. We encourage units to participate and promote this important initiative in support of our nation’s fallen heroes.
