Letter from Popcorn Kernel Greg Kunselman

Dear Fellow Leaders and Parents,

Hello, my name is Greg Kunselman and I am the Cub Master for Pack 245 and Assistant Scout Master for Troop 245 in Punxsutawney, PA. I would like to take a few minutes and talk about popcorn sales with you. You have the opportunity to make 40% commission from the popcorn sale. The base commission is 30%. If you have a leader attend the popcorn kickoff on July 31, 2019 at 6:30PM at Camp Mountain Run, you another 2.5% in commission. Ordering and paying on time will get you another 2.5%, taking you up to 35%. Then the last bench mark is a sales incentive. For every registered Scout in your unit as of August 31st, multiply that number by $250, so if you have 10 Scouts, the bench mark would be $2,500. If you reach that bench mark, you will get another 5%, raising your commission to 40%. The show and sell order is due by August 1, 2017 by using the Trail’s End popcorn system and can be picked up by appointment after August 9th at Domtar in DuBois. I have heard it many times, “we can’t sell popcorn”. My son who is a boy scout, has sold $5,400 before. When we go to a house, we have the show and sell popcorn in hand and 9 out of 10 times, they will buy the popcorn. You can set up in front of a store if they allow you. The show and sell popcorn is geared towards the strangers and take order for your friends and family.

When you order show and sell popcorn, only get the top selling items and the amount that you think you can sell.

I would ask you to attend the popcorn kickoff where each unit will receive, free of charge, a popcorn kickoff kit which contains samples of popcorn and marketing materials.

This year we will be replacing the Prize Rewards program with Amazon gift cards!  That way a Scout can purchase whatever they want!! All Scouts that sell $750 or more will receive 2 free tickets to see an exclusive showing of the new Star Wars which will be coming out in December. Every Scout selling $1000 and above will participate in the 4th annual prize vault event being held at the Sunny 106 prize vault in DuBois in early 2020.

Paying your own way is a fundamental principle of the Boy Scouts of America. It is one of the reasons why no solicitations (requests for contributions from individuals or the community) are permitted by units. Young people in Scouting are taught early on that if they want something in life, they need to earn it! The finance plan of any unit should include participation by the Scouts.

Prize Incentives

Download this year’s Trails End Order Form and Rewards Program brochure.  This guide will be mailed to all Scouts in mid-August.  Every Scout that sells at least one item will receive a participation patch.  Amazon gift certificates available at levels beyond $350 in sales.

We will also be offering a special experience for all those that sell $750 or more!  You will be invited to a showing of the new Star Wars movie “The Rise of Skywalker”.  Take a look at this special trailer:

In addition, all those that sell $1000 or more will be invited to the Prize Vault Event in the spring of 2020!  This elite club gathers once a year to select additional prizes for participants at the Sunny 106 Vault!  Previous prizes have included free summer camp experiences, Scout Shop gift cards, camping gear, gaming systems, TV’s and much more!

Last but not least, all Scouts that sell more than $2500 will be invited into the Trail’s End Scholarship Fund.  This fund helps you earn money towards your son’s or daughter’s secondary education!

Commission Structure

  1. Base Commission starts at 30%.
  2. Attend the Kick-off and do a Kick-off at your Pack, Troop or Crew meeting. An additional 2.5% will be added to your commission.
  3. Use the Popcorn system to enter your order by October 25, 2019 and pay on-time by November 18, 2019. An additional 2.5% will be added to your commission.
  4. Average $250 in sales per Scout based on the number of registered Scouts in your unit as of August 31, 2019. (Download August 31 2019 Membership Report (available in early September) – to determine how many youth your unit had on August 31st.)
  5. By completing the previous items the maximum commission will be 40%.
  6. The Bucktail Council pays for the prizes for the Scouts which averages an additional 5% going back to the unit in the form of prizes to the Scouts.
  7. That leaves about 25% of the total price of a box of popcorn that will benefit the Bucktail Council. This helps keep summer camp prices and other Scouting fees as low as possible. Thank you!

Key Dates

Show and Sell orders due for each unit participating by August 2, 2019 by placing them in the Trail’s End Popcorn System.

Popcorn Kickoff is Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at 6pm at Camp Mountain Run.

Show and Sell popcorn will arrive by August 14, 2019. You’ll be able to pick it up at Domtar in DuBois.  Please make an appointment to pick it up by calling the Council Service Center at 814-371-5650.

Show and Sell return / Money due from Show and Sell – Friday, October 18, 2019.

Take Orders and Prize Orders due – Friday, October 25, 2019. Place your Trail’s End order now. Go to the Trail’s End Popcorn System. (Prize orders can be ordered from the Popcorn System. Bonus prizes for the $750 and $1000 levels need to be submitted by sending the names of the Scouts (and the amount they sold) to Gregg Bennett by November 1, 2019. It is vital that your top selling Scouts over $750 are sent in order to generate an invitation to the top seller prize events ($750 event is the new Star Wars movie in December; $1000 is the Prize Vault event in March). Please submit the Scout’s name and the amount they sold.

For ordering prizes for your Scouts, we have contracted Trail’s End to provide electronic Amazon Gift Certificates. You will be able to order these prizes from a link in the Trail’s End System. Scouts will need to setup the Trail’s End app to receive their electronic Amazon Gift Certificates.
